The poster depicts a uniformed Marine, standing … Read more This is an original World War II Marines recruitment poster, issued in 1942. The poster depicts a uniformed Marine, standing strong and proud at attention. The persuasive text reads "READY” in large red block letters at top, followed by “Join U.S. Marines” in red and blue block letters in front and behind the figure. At right, the white text “LAND, SEA, AIR” is a reference to the first stanza of the Marines Hymn, the oldest official song in the U.S. Armed Forces. The bottom of the poster encourages onlookers to “Apply, or Write to Nearest Recruiting Station” and serve their country during the war. This poster was illustrated by Haddon Sundblom and printed in Camden, New Jersey by Alpha Litho.

In World War II, Marines played a central role in the Pacific War, participating in nearly every significant battle. During the war, the Corps grew from two brigades to two corps with six divisions, and five air wings with 132 squadrons. In addition, 20 Defense Battalions and a Parachute Battalion were also set up. In all, the Corps totaled at a maximum end strength of over 475,000 Marines, the highest in its history. Posters such as this one were crucial in recruiting young men to join the Marines.

Very good condition. Color is strong and vibrant. Paper is healthy with very minimal toning. Unframed Dimensions: 39 ¾” H x 28” W.

Poster has been artfully framed in a custom-built black wooden frame with acid-free backing and UV Plexiglas. Framed Dimensions: 42" H x 30" W x 3/4" D. See less
