This exceptional mid-19th century French Directoire period painted bookcase or display cabinet from Gordes, circa early 1800s, embodies the elegance and craftsmanship of its era. Handcrafted by skilled artisans in the renowned Provençal city of Gordes, often referred to as the "Parthenon of Provence" and celebrated as one of the most beautiful villages in France, it carries with it a rich cultural heritage. The upper cabinet of this exquisite piece features a stepped cornice, adding a touch of grandeur to its design. Its original hand-blown three-quarter glass paned locking doors are adorned with X-shaped or diamond glazing bars, accentuated by central circular paterae, exuding a sense of sophistication. Opening the doors reveals a spacious interior with three adjustable shelves, offering ample storage space with an inside depth of 14.5 inches, perfect for accommodating books and various decorative objects. In contrast, the lower cabinet boasts deeper proportions, consisting of two moulded raised panel doors that lock securely. Behind these doors lies a single interior shelf, providing additional storage for a variety of items while maintaining the piece's overall symmetry and balance.
Characterized by its clean lines, sparse details, and understated ornamentation, the simplicity of the Directoire period is evident in the bookcase's design. The striking glass doors and the beautiful patinated original exterior paint finish in a bluish-gray and off-white palette enhances its visual appeal, making it a versatile piece that complements a wide range of styles and interiors. Functionality meets aesthetics in this remarkable two-piece French bibliotheque, as it seamlessly combines open display space with closed storage options. Whether placed in a library, living room, or office, this fantastic piece is sure to add a touch of elegance and refinement to any home, becoming a focal point of admiration and conversation for generations to come. *A matching three-door bookcase from the same chateau is available.
