Here we find the Douanier (the custom officer, another name Henri Rousseau also was known as) making his plunge into the exotic. Some of the ingredients may be memories of Mexico, and some come from a book he has on botany, but the greater part from his imagination. Noteworthy is the curious distribution of the light in this canvas. He begins by painting his naked woman with due deference to modesty (and academic tradition) against the light - with the moonlight shining from behind her. But he soon breaks with this convention, or forgets it, and his magnificent pink flamingo is in full light, as are the leaves edged with chrome yellow, whose spearshaped leaves, pertaining to some fantastic variety of hortensia, are his own invention.
