EDWARD LADELL (1821 - 1886)

Ladell was born in Colchester in Essex and studied locally and in London at the Royal Academy Schools. The greatest part of his output -- and that of his wife and sometime collaborator, Ellen -- was still life painting for which he quickly gained a high reputation in his lifetime. His work shows particular richness of color always and the objects he paints are almost three-dimensional. Often working on a relatively small scale he created paintings of great visual impact and depth and today his works are much collected. Examples of his work hang in Sheffield, Reading and in London galleries.
