Title “Glengoil” & dated 1886 by James M Robert Greenlees.
Oil on canvas.
Subject landscape view of the known Scottish Highlands landscape honeypot view of Glen Goil in Argyll and Bute Scotland.
Signed near the bottom corner by the known Scottish artist James M Roberts Greenlees and also inscribed by the artist verso.
Circa late 19th century Victorian era dated 1886.
Set in the original heavy decorative gilded frame which enhances this painting even further.
Such an impressive display size with the frame being 134 cm wide and 109 cm high & 10 cm in depth.
Your first notice about this painting is the incredible detailed deep perspective that it has to Glen Goil, you are drawn to the meandering River Goil that flows through this scene, which has many sall stone boulders along its river bank edges, a rough old wooden fence that slopes down to the river edge, with deep tall green lush vegetation on either side, to your right is a footpath that goes back and you can see a sole Scottish gentleman wearing a red tartan kilt walking along. You can see birds flying low, further back a forest of trees around the base of the sloping hills and mountains, with smoke rising on either flank from 2 small fires, then right at the back is the fabulous view of the jagged summit highest peak Ben Donich, above with a mix of bright blue sky with white & grey clouds lower down. You can feel the peace and tranquility in this scene. The different hues are so vivid and vibrant and really stand out which you will adore.
In our opinion this is his very finest work.
Artist biography James M Roberts Greenlees was a known British artist who was born in the year 1820, Robert Greenlees (1820– 6 September 1894) was a Scottish artist and educationalist. He was employed at the Glasgow School of Art as a pupil teacher, both teaching and studying. Greenlees taught drawing in the elementary classes, and became the Second Master. In 1863 the headmaster of the school, Charles Heath Wilson, retired and Greenlees was appointed his successor. He was the headmaster until 1881. Initially Greenlees worked in stained glass. He later moved to landscape painting in oils and watercolours. Greenlees advocated for the attendance of women pupils at life classes, and appointed four female teachers at the school. His daughter Georgina was one of the teachers. Greenlees also introduced the teaching of nautical draughtsmanship – a number of designers at the Clyde shipyards were graduates of the school. One of his pupils was the landscape artist Alexander Brownlie Docharty while another was the noted landscape artist Archibald Kay. His paintings and have been exhibited and sold in auctions around the world like Christies & Bonhams.
‘Glen Goil’. The peak on the right is Ben Donich, the mountains to the left Beinn an t-seilich and Stob an East. The view is from the south end of Glen Goil near Lochgoilhead. Loch Goil; (Scottish Gaelic: Loch Goil) is a small sea loch forming part of the coast of the Cowal peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. The sea loch is entirely within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. It is an arm of Loch Long. The village of Lochgoilhead stands at its head. Located in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, Lochgoilhead sits at the head of Loch Goil, a fjord type sea loch. Only an hour from the Erskine Bridge, Glasgow Airport the M8 and Glasgow. The village is accessed from the Rest & Be Thankful pass by way of a 6 miles (10 km) single-track road. The area is surrounded by hills and mountains, with loch views, and a range of accommodation, leisure activities and entertainment. Carrick Castle lies on the west shore 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Lochgoilhead.
The landscape at Loch Goil shows its remoteness and Highland grandeur with the Arrochar Alps surrounding with conifers in the Highlands of Scotland. It is used for exercises by Trident submarines from HMNB Clyde at Faslane. In 2014 Loch Goil was declared a Nature Conservation Marine Protected Area (NCMPA).
