Andy Warhol ( 1928 - 1987 ) is one of the singularly most well known Contemporary artists of all time. His imagery is recognized worldwide. His infamous life, artworks, and creative endeavors are like no other artist. He is credited as the very first artist to use common everyday objects and view them in a completely different way while paying homage to their role in our society. Glorifying the common as the beautiful.
This exhibition volume presents Warhol as one of the most significant and influential artists of The 20th Century. Tracing his artistic evolution, it shows how his work reflected and commented on themes in American society that were also international. He had an unerring eye for the iconic images which captured the themes of his time : Coca Cola, Marilyn, Elvis, The Electric Chair, The Crashed Car, The Race Riot and The Atomic Bomb. His openness to subjet matter was matched by a willingness to explore all media resulting in his innovative approach to painting, as well as film, video, photography, drawing and printmaking.
In the four essays which precede the illustrations, distinguished Warhol scholars probe the psychology, artistic intent and technique of this enigmatic artist.
Heiner Bastian, drawing on his friendship with Warhol, traces his development from graphic artist to international star. Kirk Varnedoe examines the significance of The Campbell's Soup cans Series and the role of the multiple.Donna De Salvo takes the concept of the " Afterimage " in Warhol's work as a starting point for considering his painterly strategy, while Peter-Klaus Schuster compares Warhol's Death and Disaster sequences witH Goya, proposing that Andy Warhol is ultimately a complex mixture of victim, superstar, and redeemer.
