This fine piece of studio pottery is signed by Stanley Ballard. His pieces are very collectible and this one is great. It’s in the darkest gray with a fine texture of black glaze. A very rare color. Made in Vermont. Marked on the bottom “S Ballard Vermont 20.”
Based in Burlington Vermont, Stanley Ballard was a very well regarded and prolific studio pottery artist until 1960. He trained at Alfred University, considered the best ceramics department in America. His work is daringly simple at a time when decoration was the prevailing style. He uses just a few glaze colors, often with a darker “chocolate” edge.
