Intricately embellished with delicate yet highly complex dimensional designs - often in gold. Originating in the 16th century - Satsuma wares were first shown to the west in 1867. Which led to a collecting frenzy throughout the Meiji period (1868-1912). We believe this piece is early 20th century in origin.

This ginger jar with lid is embellished with the "Mille Fleur" or "thousand flowers" design. Which symbolizes that "all flowers bestow blessings". Featuring peonies, chrysanthemums, hibiscus, morning glories, roses, lotus flowers, daisies, and lilies amidst an abundance of foliage. Delicately painted in a range of hues over a gold ground. And embellished with dimensional gold detailing. Lid finial and base top rim border are gold. With oxblood banding on the lid rim and at the base. Marks on the bottom include a circle with a cross. The family crest of the Shimazu who ruled Satsuma.

Measures 6.5" diameter (at widest point) x 12.25" high.
