Crafted in France circa 1870, the rectangular case is veneered in richly figured rosewood, displaying striking contrasting grain patterns and a deep, polished patina. The top and front are embellished with engraved mother-of-pearl escutcheons, adding a refined decorative touch.

The hinged lid opens to reveal a beautifully preserved interior lined with deep purple velvet and accented with delicate gilt trim. The fitted compartments accommodate six original glass vanity containers, including two square cut-glass bottles with decorative stoppers, two cylindrical glass jars with silver-tone lids, and two smaller matching jars. The carefully arranged wooden dividers provide additional storage for jewelry, toiletries, and personal accessories.

Two discreet metal handles inside the case allow the upper fitted tray to be lifted, revealing further storage underneath. One of the most intriguing features is a concealed mechanism that releases a secret drawer at the front, lined with blue velvet and divided into compartments for storing jewelry and other valuables.

Known in France as a nécessaire de voyage, these portable vanity cases were fashionable among affluent travelers during the 19th century, combining practical organization with luxurious materials and fine cabinetmaking.
