What is it?
—
Another gem from the masters of mid century lightning – Gordon and Jane Martz. Not too big, not too small – this ceramic lamp is equally at home on an end table or credenza as it is on a dresser or bedside table.
This signed Martz #85-51 lamp comes in a matte white glaze with an incised swirl pattern that runs the entire diameter of the lamp. The tan clay body is revealed by the incised line. The lamp is composed of two stacked sections and rests on a thick walnut slab base. The lamp is completed with a tapered neck and is capped off with a reproduction finial that mimics the thicker/taller look that this lamp was sold with.
This model of lamp first appeared in the 1952 Marshall Studios catalog and was in continuous production through the majority of the Martz/Marshall Studios era.
The photos display the lamp with a 17x18x13 shade — per the catalogs, this lamp was often sold with a 17x18x12 or 11" heigh shade. The shade can be made available for a separate fee if you like this look, or I'm happy to have a shade custom built for you.
Martz / Marshall Studios 101
—
Jane Marshall—whose grandmother founded Marshall Studios in 1922—married Gordon Martz in 1951, a year before the couple graduated from New York’s Alfred University. They returned to Veedersburg to work in the family business, bringing with them a passion for contemporary hand-designed stoneware.
The Martzes’ work transformed Marshall Studios. What had been a lampshade manufacturing company became a hotbed of handcrafted modern lamps and accessories. Martz lamp bases were slip-cast for mass production and later decorated by hand using techniques such as incising, dipping, and brushing to create a variety of patterns and colors.
Martz lamps have been featured in the Museum of Modern Art, a growing number of private collections and are the darling of the French modernist auction scene.
