This is a wood print on Japanese rice paper printed in three colors: First, the whole block of wood was covered with yellow printing paint, next only parts of the carved block were covered with blue printing paint, and finally black was applied to the block for the hair of the girl in the portrait as well as applied lightly across the top of the carved wood block without allowing the paint to spread to the bottom of the grooves. The light brown wood frame has never been hung on a wall. Mary Abouchaar studied printmaking at Hornsey College of Art in North London. There were only ten original prints made. No additional prints were ever made. Mary Abouchaar is an American citizen who resides currently in Los Angeles County, California. Her grandfather, Alexander Abouchaar helped the British at the time when they colonized Egypt. He was neither of Egyptian birth, nor of British birth. Mary remembers him from a photo in which he is sitting in a carved wood chair, with a row of medals pinned across his chest in recognition for his service. His son Charles, Mary's father, born in Alexandria, traveled to Lebanon as a teenager to study at the American University of Beirut, which has, by virtue of the authority vested in it by charter under the laws of the State of New York in the United States of America, to confer accredited degrees. Charles Abouchaar enrolled as a student in the School of Pharmacy. After obtaining a bachelor's degree in pharmacy, he completed a graduate Pharmacy degree at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. A few years later, he earned a Ph.D. at the School of Pharmacy of the University of Washington. Mary Abouchaar made a decision upon completing her first artwork at age thirteen in Seattle, Washington, that she would never sell any of her original drawings or paintings individually, with the goal of selling her lifetime original artwork to one museum or gallery in the future, where visitors would view the exhibit of all her artwork in one location. She has now decided, for the first time, to offer original prints for sale, because she would be able to keep one of the limited-edition originals to be included in the exhibit of all the artwork. An international art appraiser, who is also publisher and literary critic, estimated that a purchase at this time of an original artwork by Mary Abouchaar is a sound investment because she has just begun to publicize her picture book series about "Tyler the Rabbit" for children under ten, all of which have won a Mom's Choice Award for excellence, a 5 out of 5-stars rating by OnlineBookClub.org, and have been endorsed by Amin Maalouf, member and recently elected perpetual secretary of the French Academy, who expressed in his review: "Everyone should read Tyler's stories; the world would be a much better place. The universal values portrayed by hero Tyler are for all ages, and especially important for our young ones: Generosity, decency, honesty, and forgiveness."
The family name 'Abouchaar' is written overseas in two legal spellings. 'Abouchaar' for speakers of French, and 'Abushar' for speakers of English. When Mary began publishing her children's book series, she had the spelling legally changed by court order to 'Abushar' to enable young American readers to pronounce the name easily. She has kept the spelling 'Abushar' on the books about Tyler the Rabbit that she has rewritten in French. The price of every wood print being offered for sale on Chairish was set based on offers made in the past by prospective buyers, but that Mary had declined to accept. She is now in possession of all her artwork, most of which are posted on her website and are for sale only as copies, not as originals. They may be viewed at mcabushar.fineartamerica.com.
