Signed lower left, 'Emily Syminton' for Emily Elinor Syminton (American, 1919-2002) and painted circa 1965.
Emily Symington first studied at Chouinard for about three years, then found herself at the Accademia in Florence. The artist said: ‘This was during the time when Mussolini was allowing foreigners into the country to attend the Academia free of charge. This was an annoyance to many of the teachers. If, on top of this, you couldn’t speak Italian, they completely ignored you, so I returned to the United States'.
Upon her return, she enrolled at Scripps College to complete her MFA. After graduating, she was appointed head of the art department at Westridge College. Moving to New York, she was employed as a teacher by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and also worked as a fabric designer. Over the years, she also painted large murals for installation in a number of locations, including the Sahara and Dunes Casinos in Las Vegas.
