Designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved in 1820–21 by Lukas Ahorn, the lion bears the inscription 'HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI.' Marked 'LION OF LUCERNE' on the back, both pieces have textured backing and felt on the bottom. Despite the absence of a maker's mark, these substantial and aesthetically pleasing bookends hold historical significance. Mark Twain once called the Lion of Lucerne "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world." Perfect for your collection or shelves; please review the accompanying photos for details. less
