An 18th century French Louis XVI style trumeau mirror with a large painting depicting Thetis at the Forge of Hephaestus after a composition by Baroque artist Jacques Blanchard (1600-1638). The scene portrays Thetis, the mother of Achilles, visiting the devine blacksmith, Hephaestus (Vulcan in Roman myth) at his forge. After Hector stripped Achilles of his armor, Thetis traveled to Mount Etna to request a legendary new set of divine weapons so her son could exact his revenge. Hephaestus stands at the anvil with a raised hammer, while the freshly crafted shield and helmut of Achilles sit prominently on the floor between them. Fine quality oil on canvas with vivid color. Painting has been professionally cleaned and restored. Gilded wood frame is in good condition with minor losses and touch-ups. Original mirror with silvered patina and some fogging. Circa 1780-1800.
