1902-1984 Jean Boris Lacroix
The unusual two-tone nickel and bronze armature adds to its allure. Opalescent art glass shades, adorned with the same bird motif, crown each arm, all suspended from a central shaft stem with yet another matching opalescent glass illuminated cup as it's finial and culminating in a conical nickel canopy. The opalescent glass subtly hints at various colors, and like a chameleon it can change with its environment appearing as shades of blue, pink, gold, or purple depending on reflection and surrounding light. A clever blend of beautifully machined bronze and elegant glass, harmoniously marrying functionality and aesthetics with nature-inspired themes.
Jean-Boris Lacroix :
Born in 1877 in Saint Petersburg, Grand Duke Boris Vladimirovich was the third child and second surviving son of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovitch of Russia and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna.
Grand Duke Boris had a liaison with a Frenchwoman, Jeanne Aumont-Lacroix, in 1901, resulting in the birth of Jean-Boris Lacroix in 1902.
Though the child was not officially recognized, once installed in Paris, Jean-Boris and his two sons regularly visited Grand Duke Boris.
Jean-Boris Lacroix initiated his career in 1920, joining the workshop of Paul Dumas and further refining his skills as a drawer for the renowned fashion designer, Madeleine Vionnet. Between 1925 and 1930, he designed various houses for Vionnet and eventually became the artistic director. During this time, he collaborated with notable figures like J. M. Frank, Pierre Chareau, and Jean Dunand, creating furniture alongside his own designs.
From around 1926, Lacroix delved into lamp design, unveiling his creations to the public at the 1927 Salon des artistes décorateurs.
Among his numerous creations, his lighting designs gained particular acclaim. In 1927, at the 'Salon des Artistes Décorateurs' and the 'Salon d'Automne,' he presented lightings that captivated the public with their expert use of glass and metal in chandeliers, sconces, and lamps. In the mid-30s, he crafted a series of chandeliers and sconces featuring motifs of birds, seashells, seahorses, and mermaids. His pieces and these glass cups are marked with the distinctive monogram LA+ ; croix means cross in French.
Jean-Boris Lacroix passed away in 1984.
