Origins and history:
The history of Murano glassmaking is intertwined with the history of Venice. It all started with the migration of Altino's inhabitants to the lagoon after Attila the Hun invaded their land in 452 CE. They settled in the marshy islands of the lagoon and started making glass. By the 8th century, Venice had become a prominent trade center between the Byzantine Empire and the Orient. This helped the city to establish itself as a hub of glass making. The secrets of this craft were passed on from one generation to the next, and it became an essential part of Venice's cultural heritage. One of the most remarkable things about Murano glass making is that the lagoon's small islands lack the natural resources required to make glass, such as sand, soda, and ash from trees. Even the trees needed for burning in the furnaces had to be sourced from the mainland. Despite these challenges, Venetians managed to make the most out of their limited resources and create a thriving industry that still exists today.
