If you love real coastal art — the kind that feels collected, not mass-produced — this one is special. This is an original 1968 watercolor depicting a classic Maine harbor scene: a small boat in still water, weathered dock pilings, and a stilted working shack with lobster buoys — pure New England character. The light, loose linework and layered washes give it that effortless mid-century sketchbook feel that designers are constantly trying to recreate.
Signed and titled in the artist’s hand: “Schepens-Kraus — Kennebunkport, Maine — 1968.”
The reverse retains a label reading “Watercolors by Schepens-Kraus, Kennebunkport.” Always love when provenance stays with the piece. Measures 13" wide by 17" tall.
In very good vintage condition with normal patina for a 1960s watercolor. For its age, this presents beautifully.
• Watercolor paper shows age-appropriate toning
• Minor spotting/foxing consistent with vintage works on paper
• No obvious tears or major damage visible
• Mat and frame are older and show light wear — I’d consider them part of the charm, but you could re-mat for a brighter, more contemporary look if desired
• Frame is solid and display-ready with hanging wire
This is the kind of art that makes a room feel collected over time. Not generic coastal décor — an actual place, an actual artist, a real moment on the Maine coast.
