A rare and most impressive antique European cast iron mythological relief panel fireback.
18th/19th Century, Continental Europe, likely Italian, large thick rectangular architectural cast iron plaque with two points, decorated in relief with ancient Greco Roman horse chariot and charioteer. Likely after Pelops and Hippodamaia, depicting Alexander the Great & Nike, showing the triumphal entry of Alexander the Great into Babylon on a four-horse chariot driven by the goddess Nike.
The fireback is mounted with later iron brackets that allow the piece to be displayed freestanding.

26.5" High to points, 25" High panel, 39" Wide, 3.5" Deep panel, 14" Deep with bracket stand. Heavy, approx 200lbs
Attractive appearance, with nicely aged warm rustic heavily worn distressed patina. Wear consistent with age and use, including oxidation, scattered holes and losses. Overall strong, sturdy.
Makes for a fascinating and highly decorative sculptural object!
