By the 1970s, American photographer Laurie Simmons (b. 1949) was staging scenes for her camera with objects on legs, dolls, ventriloquist dummies and people, to create photographs referencing domestic scenes. She is a part of “The Pictures Generation,” a group that came to prominence in the 70s. Her “Walking and Lying Objects” series (1987-1991) included legs protruding from an hourglass, a gun, a globe and a house. This Cibachrome photograph is the “Lying House.” The series number is 24/50 as noted on the back. The signature is obscured by matting.
