Century, African Ghanian Tribal, hand-carved wood Ashanti stool/bench, with an intertwined, crocodile carved motif. In Ashanti these stools are perceived as an icon of power, with achievement and authority. The piece has been hand-carved from one piece of wood. The seat ends curve upwards on either side, both to physically embrace the user as well as symbolically furnish refuge for the soul. While carved etching s and motifs mark or represent achievements of its owner and adorn the surface and edges of this stool. Looks as if they are crocodile's in an x-base pattern and resting on a plinth base. Along with tribal design motifs, of x-mitered, crosshatch design motif of entire piece. Along the apposing ends, of top seating portion and side sedges of seating area, also in addition to more recessed, , carved areas on offsetting apposing sides of base of stool/bench, as well as base surround, perimeter edging.
