Stuempfle is particularly known for large-scale, wood-fired stoneware and for surfaces created through the interaction of clay, flame, wood ash and the intense atmosphere of the kiln.

This signed vase is an excellent example of Stuempfle’s wood-firing technique. The prolonged firing allows flame, wood ash, salt and minerals to interact with the clay, producing the richly varied salt-and-ash-glazed surface characteristic of his work. The resulting drips, flashes and tonal variations are created through the intense atmosphere of the wood-fired kiln, making each piece unique.

The vase bears Stuempfle's “DS” pottery stamp.

Stuempfle has worked and exhibited throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He was a recipient of a U.S./Japan Creative Artists Fellowship and an NEA Central and Eastern Europe Visual Arts Fellowship and has taught at Penland School of Craft, The Bascom and numerous colleges and universities.

His work is represented in museum collections including the Mint Museum, Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park Museum in Japan, Museum of Ceramic Art, Fuller Craft Museum, Asheville Art Museum, Mobile Museum of Art and Museum of International Folk Art, among others. See less
