In cloisonné the decoration is created by first adding thin strips of metal to form compartments which are then filled, with the metal edges forming a part of the design. This piece pays tribute to the style by using a delicate and lovely cloud like pattern, as seen in finer pieces of cloisonné, in rich dark pastel red to form the background, while other carefully crafted cloisonné like gold edges form a graceful bird, flowers, leaves, stems and cherry blossoms in many shades of green, blue, yellow, pink, and peach. There is then a decorative design around the upper edge and a gold painted lip. Particularly clever is the artist's use of the unembellished porcelain to form borders within the piece which helps highlight the unique shape of the piece.
