In the photo emma is wearinga piece of jewelry that she had received on the occasion of her engagement from her husband, king willem iii. The picture frames can be used as standing frames as well as hanging at the wall. King william iii, prince of orange-nassau, was king of the netherlands and grand duke of luxembourg from march 17, 1849 until his death in 1890. He was also duke of limburg from 1849 until the abolition of the duchy in 1866. Willem marries his niece sophie van württemberg. Willem and sophie are very different from each other and the marriage is not a success. They live separately in different palaces. Nevertheless, the couple has three sons, one of whom dies young. The sons willem and alexander also die before their father. After sophie died, willem married emma van waldeck-pyrmont, who was more than forty years his junior. Emma of waldeck-pyrmont (1858-1934) the young german princess emma van waldeck-pyrmont married king william iii in 1879. They have one daughter, wilhelmina. King willem iii died in 1890, when wilhelmina was only ten years old. Emma rules as regent until wilhelmina is eighteen. The portrait photo of the king was taken by de lavieter & co. The company 'j.l. De lavieter & co.' operated a photo studio in the hague from may 1865 to 1903. The main photographer was f.j. Cuissenier. The portrait photo of emma was taken by marinus mattheus couvée in 1856 marinus mattheus couvée opened a bookshop on the lange poten in the hague 1868 - 1917. The portrait photos dates between 1878 engagement year and the 1879 wedding year. The measurement is 20 cm high, 15,8 cm wide and the depth is 13 cm approx. The total weight is 462 grams See less
