Antique Victorian Cut Glass / Crystal and Silver Electroplate 6 Piece Cruet Set with Sterling Silver Spoon from Henry Hobson & Son in Sheffield England, Circa 1860-1870 based upon research and markings.
My parents bought this set for me for my 25th birthday present on a trip to England. My mother and I had the best time visiting many of the wonderful antique stores in London and we found this. It is in perfect condition and has all of the original pieces. The spoon with the set is sterling silver and I can provide those marks upon request. I couldn't upload any other photos. I have loved using this daily but am downsizing and no longer have room for it and don't want to put it in a cabinet to collect dust.
The set consists of 6 exquisite cut glass condiment bottles traditionally for salt, pepper, oil, vinegar, etc., and a jam or honey jar with a sterling silver spoon. Total pieces in the set = 14 consisting of 6 bottles, 3 crystal stoppers, 2 silver salt & pepper lids, 1 silver jam lid, 1 sterling silver spoon, and the condiment tray or caddy.
The business was established in Sheffield by Henry Hobson in 1845. A London branch was opened in 1852 and later styled George Hobson & Sons. Queen Street factory moved to Carver Street (1901) and then to Eyre Lane, Sheffield (1912)
EPNS marking on bottom of base certifies it is the premium silver plate invented by Italian Chemist Luigi V. Brugnatelli in 1805 and brought to England and patented and used by Henry Hobson & Sons for this piece.
Details about Henry Hobson & Sons from Ken Hawley Collection Trust - K.0420 (copywrite)
"Henry Hobson (1823-1897) was born in Sheffield, the son of Edward Hobson and his wife, Hannah. In 1842, Henry married Ann, the only daughter of John Pearce, a cutlery dealer and razor manufacturer in Angel Street. Hobson became Pearce’s manager, but in 1845 launched his own cutlery dealership with his younger brother John B. Hobson. They were listed in 1852 as Hobson Brothers (John and Henry, and later Frederick Jun.) in Bank Buildings, Bank Street, in the town centre.
Hobson Bros opened a London branch, with Henry living in Houndsditch with his wife, Ann. However, in 1852 Henry and John dissolved Hobson Bros, and henceforth Henry operated alone. In 1861, he was living with his family (and three servants) at Hallamshire House in Highbury Hill, London. He was a ‘wholesale cutler’ in Queen Street/Bank Street in Sheffield (and London), but until about 1868 operated as ‘John Pearce & Co’ (though his father-in-law had died in 1860). By 1876, Henry was trading as Henry Hobson & Son in Queen Street, Sheffield, and Houndsditch, London. The ‘Son’ was Henry Hobson Jun. (1848-1890)."
