This finely crafted writing box has Mother of Pearl inlay, brass fittings, and a hand-tooled leather interior. There are two compartments in the base, as pictured, and three lidded compartments at the top, each with an ivory nob. The inkwells are original, with traces of ink still remaining inside. The quill/pen tray comes out to reveal a fourth hidden compartment in the top.

These writing boxes would have been used by fine ladies and gentlemen as they journeyed through Europe on their "Grand Tour", as was customary during the Georgian period and into the Victorian era. At this time, writing slopes and boxes were essential for travel, as the upper class in particular wrote daily correspondences.

This beautiful box is a veritable piece of history, with remnants of ink still in the inkwells and ink stains where a previous owner forgot to seal the well entirely, or perhaps spilled as they were refilling the well. See less
