New "Indigo Collection" just arrived from Jaipur and they are airing in the warm breeze here at HemlockHouse VT. We are working with a women's co-op in India that is creating our designs from antique patterns, hand-blocked and printed using centuries-old technology and natural dyes.

About Indigo - The King of Dyes
Indigo, known as the "King of Dyes," is one of the world's most ancient colorants, used by the people of Egypt and Asia for more than 4,000 years. Even the 12th-century Roman historian Pliny the Elder wrote about indigo as "a product of India, being a slime that adheres to the scum upon reeds. When sifted out it is black, but in dilution, it yields a marvellous mixture of purple and blue."
The magic happens when soluble indigo in the vat impregnates white cloth. When removed and exposed to air, it oxidizes and transforms into that distinctive blue we treasure. The processing time varies based on the desired shade of indigo, and for centuries people have cherished this color's richness and tradition.
