. A stunning Louis-XV style (Rocaille) revival mirror circa 1850–1880 with hand-carved giltwood and a finely scrolled, acanthus-leaf crest and flanking volutes. The original mercury-silver mirror plate may have been re-silvered or replaced, probably late 1800s. A full-height cheval mirror, designed to tilt on its pair of turned side supports. Typical of Parisian ateliers catering to the growing 19th century bourgeois market for elegant “dressing” furniture. Moderate wear to the gilt (notably at the base rail), some gilt loss around high points of carving. Structurally sound.
It was meticulously kept in a Chatham family for over 100 years. Once part of a trio of mirrors residing in a Quebec estate. Beautiful woodwork and gilt treatment resulting in a warm patina.
