A perfect catch for wood-block print collectors and Japanese fine art fans.

A good find to complete or start a collection. Nowadays there is a growing interest in Kuchi-e prints and they are a specific genre amongst Japanese woodblock prints.

Every Kuchi e print has the usual folding lines due to the way it was folded in a book or magazine. Kuchi-e (frontispiece illustration) were made for popular literary magazines largely aimed at female readers in the Meiji-Taisho era. They were published by newly established publishers such as Bungei Kurabu, Shunyodo and Suzando.

Kuchi-e were frontispiece illustrations for magazines and novels. Towards the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century, kuchi-e were widespread and popular. And at that time they were one of the few possibilities for printmakers in Japan to make a living.

The first colorful print depicts a beautiful woman, or bijin in Japanese, putting a "kanzashi" (hair pin) on her hair. She is peeking out from a green bamboo shade. This illustration comes from the novel, "Aki Donari" Almost autumn, published in Bungei Kurabu magazine, Vol.19, No.12 in Taisho Era, 1913. It is marked by the artist with his seal Keishû 桂舟.

The second one depicts a woman holding a lacquer box with gold ornamentation and two assistants carrying a large set of "Hina dolls" with other decorations, to celebrate Hina Mitsuri. This print was the frontispiece to a very popular literary magazine Bungei Club (Literature Club). This illustration was created in the Meiji Era, 1910.

Takeuchi Keishu was born in 1861 in Edo under the given name of Takeuchi Ginpei. His father was from the samurai class and a retainer of the daimyo of Kishio. Takeuchi Keishu had never received formal art training. But one day he went to the studio of Meiji master Yoshitoshi (Taiso) Tsukioka, and Yoshitoshi kept him as his student.

Beginning in the 1890s, Takeuchi Keishu began to work as an illustrator, mainly for the genre of kuchi-e. To keep himself afloat, Takeuchi had worked as a porcelain painter before he began to make woodblock prints.

Takeuchi Keishu is primarily known for his large output of kuchi-e genre woodblock prints. Kuchi-e were frontispiece illustrations for magazines and novels. Towards the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century, kuchi-e were widespread and popular. And at that time they were one of the few possibilities for printmakers in Japan to make a living But it was a meager living.

They are both in good condition with some signs of aging. Minor soils, stains, marks and flaws. The second illustration has a tear on the washi paper and a mark of humidity in the bottom. Please look at the last picture (zoom in) to assess the condition of the item. It is priced accordingly.
