This is an antique portrait of a mysterious woman looking back over her shoulder. She is dressed in a coat and broad brimmed hat and appears to be holding some papers in her left hand. Who is this intriguing woman? Where is she going? It's a little hard to tell from the photos, but she appears to be looking right at you. This unconventional painting of a mysterious woman elicits all kinds of speculation. Early 20th century. British. Oil on canvas. Painted by well listed artist William McWhannel Petrie (English, 1870-1937). Signed lower left. The painting itself measures 32" x 25 1/2" and is displayed in a simple grey painted wood frame measuring 33 1/2" x 27 1/4".

Condition: The painting itself is in overall good condition with some in-painting, mainly to the hat, and a dimple in the canvas (upper right quarter) where something must have pressed against it at some point. The frame shows some light chipping, mostly to the liner.
