Henri Petitot’s Atelier produced some of the most visually arresting lighting of the Art Deco period; it’s my conjecture that these sconces came from his shop.
Two aspects lead me this conclusion. First and foremost, the “chipped ice” aspect of the glass embellishments on the edge of the sconces (typically found on glass bowl shades adorning Petitot chandeliers). Two, their unusual and interesting design, and size (large). Of course they’re made of solid brass, consistent with all self-respecting manufacturers of the time. They were originally nickel-plated, but the plating had suffered the ravages of Time Herself over the decades (and plenty of them). I had them stripped down to the brass and re-plated in the “jewelry for the home” brushed nickel that you see in the photos. Tres chic, n’est-ce pas?
You can use any size bulb you want in the standard-sized American sockets I’ve installed. The more wattage the merrier is my feeling, especially if you have these sconces on a dimmer. When they’re on full power, the up-lighting will create a very dramatic effect, and nicely illuminate your room with that most blessed of elements, indirect lighting. The three glass embellishments on each sconce will light up and provide that extra visual punch to send you over the Edge of Delight.
In perfect, restored condition!
Measurements: about 13 inches wide, three top-to-bottom, and projecting 7 ½ from the wall. “Great presence” we call that!
