The word 'gabbeh' in Persian (farsi) means 'unclipped.’ It is a useful term for the genuinely nomadic tribal rugs of the southwest fars province qashqai and the luri of luristan province to the west. The tribal weavers make two kinds of rugs: those for external sale and those for home use. Those made for sale are the well decorated, often finely woven, geometric style rugs and bags with hooked diamonds, boteh (paisley), animals, stylized flowers, allover diaper patterns and wide color ranges. The patterns are characteristic of each qashqai or luri subtribe. See less
