This is a mid 18th century engraved portrait of Abel François Poisson de Vandières, Marquis de Marigny by Jean Georges … Read more This is a mid 18th century engraved portrait of Abel François Poisson de Vandières, Marquis de Marigny by Jean Georges Wille after a painting by Louis Tocque. It was published in Paris in 1761. The original painting by Tocque hangs in Versailles. Abel François Loisson, Marquis de Marigny, Conseiller du Roy en ses Conseils, Commandeur de ses Ordres, Directeur et Ordonnateur Géneral des Bastiments, Jardins, Arts Academies et Manufactures Royales. For this portrait Abel-François Poisson, Marquis de Marigny is depicted three-quarter length, standing directed to left, wearing a fur-trimmed coat with sash and insignia of the Order of the Saint-Esprit. His right hand is resting on architectural plans for buildings, for which he is presumably in charge of overseeing construction. A billowing large curtain with a long tassel, as well as a glimpse of the pilasters and curved crown moulding are in the background. His coat of arms is in the center of the lower inscription area.

This strikingly beautiful and detailed engraving is printed on a sheet measuring 19.5" high and 13.63" wide. The sheet is attached along the upper edge to a larger archival sheet. There is mild discoloration in the margins, which does not involve the image. There is a small pinhole at the upper portion of the inscription region on the left and two tiny pinholes in the lower image, which can only be seen with a bright light illuminating the sheet from behind. The image is otherwise in very good condition.
