Chapman is based on an original painting by the renowned British artist J.M.W. Turner. It was published in London by James S. Virtue in 1859-1875. It depicts a panoramic view of the seaside town of Scarborough on the east coast of England. The engraving, created in the 19th century, captures the bustling activity of the town's harbor with ships and boats coming and going, as well as the rugged cliffs and castle ruins overlooking the sea. In the foreground, a group of fishermen are shown hauling in their catch while spectators look on. The dramatic lighting and use of perspective in the engraving showcase Turner's mastery of landscape painting and Chapman's skill as an engraver.
