This is an original John James Audubon hand-colored royal first octavo edition lithograph entitled "Red-cockaded Woodpecker, 1. 2. Male, 3. Female", No. 53, Plate 264, from Audubon's "Birds of America". It was lithographed, printed and colored by J. T. Bowen and published in Philadelphia between 1840-1844. It depicts two male woodpeckers on a tree branch. One is looking up at a female woodpecker sitting on a higher branch and the other is looking to the left. First edition octavo prints are very desirable for Audubon collectors today, because they were created under the direct instruction and supervision of Audubon and were always entirely hand-colored.
This original vibrant first octavo edition hand-colored Audubon lithograph has an extremely faint tiny barely visible spot on the left. The print is otherwise in excellent condition. The sheet measures 10.88" high by 6.75" wide. The original descriptive text pages, 254-258, from Audubon's 19th century publication are included.
