Male, 2, Female, Papaw … Read more This is an original 1st octavo edition John James Audubon hand-colored lithograph entitled "Yellow-billed Cuckoo, 1. Male, 2, Female, Papaw Tree", No. 55, Plate 275 from Audubon's "Birds of America, lithographed, printed and colored by J. T. Bowen and published in Philadelphia between 1840-1844. It depicts a male and a female yellow-billed cuckoo perched on branches of a Papaw tree. The female appears to calling with its mouth open. The male has found a butterfly. A cluster of Papaw fruit is depicted below the female. The Papaw or Pawpaw tree is found in the US in 26 states, from western New York west to eastern Texas and east to the Florida. The Pawpaw fruit is used in beverages, candies, pies, puddings, and cocktails, but is hard to find in stores.

This original 1st octavo edition hand-colored Audubon Yellow-billed Cuckoo lithograph is in excellent condition, other than a few small faint spots in the right margin. The sheet measures 6.5" high by 10.13" wide. The original text pages, 293-298, from Audubon's 19th century publication are included with the lithograph. See less
