This is an original John James Audubon hand-colored royal first octavo edition lithograph entitled "Semipalmated Snipe, Willet or Stone Curlew, 1. Male Spring Plumage, 2. Female in Winter", No. 70, Plate 347, from Audubon's "Birds of America". It was lithographed, printed and colored by J. T. Bowen and published in Philadelphia between 1840-1844. It depicts two adult male birds standing , one in high grass. A female is standing on rocks on the left. First edition octavo prints are very desirable for Audubon collectors today, because they were created under the direct instruction and supervision of Audubon and were always entirely hand-colored.
This original vibrant first octavo edition hand-colored Audubon lithograph has two small spots on the right, but it is otherwise in excellent condition. The sheet measures 6.625" high by 10" wide. The descriptive text pages, 324-330, from Audubon's original publication are included.
