The … Read more Portrait of an English gentleman, oil on canvas, 18th century. Finally done work by an academically trained English artist. The sitter in a powdered wig, wearing a black suit with a white tie and jeweled pin. At his hand and under his arm are two leather bound volumes. He has been properly reframed in a proper gilt deep cove frame. Apparently unsigned, in good condition, with only the most minor imperfections at the lower left. This well painted portrait needs to been seen in person to realize this vibrant image. Very old paper tags on the reverse each attribute the painting to Gilbert Stuart. Although I cannot agree with these old attributions, they do reflect on the high quality of the work. See less
