Gillett, British naive artist late 19th to early 20th centuries, "J Class Race - 1st August 1884, won by Irex (Captain and Owner John Jamison) over Marjorie and Genesta", "A Close Finish at Plymouth 1884", 7 3/4" x 12 7/8", scene of the race finish showing Lorna, Marjorie, Genesta and Irex, signed D.F. Gillett in the lower right corner front, CA number 3933, CA purchased early fall 2023 from an east of England auction house.
The work has been cleaned, matted with White Museum Board, lined, Conservation Clear Glass, museum backing, framed in 1 1/4" antiqued and distressed copper and bronze moulding.
Written on the frame reverse: J Class Race 1st August 1884, won by Irex (Captain & Owner John Jamison) over Marjorie and Genesta. Following year Genesta represented Britain in 5th running of the America's Cup.The Atlantic crossing by Genesta was achieved in the record time of 22 days from Queenstown to Staten Island.
