A sculptor of animals, Sirio Tofanari (Florence 1886 – Milan 1969) is not inclined to the school discipline, he decides to learn and train as self-taught by travelling around Europe First in Paris, then in London, where he spends time observing animals at the zoo and studying their anatomy at the Natural History Museum to be able to represent them in the most realistic possible way. His is a delicate and patient work almost as a goldsmith, first on wax to be entrusted to the smelter then on bronze to be chiseled and patinated. He will exhibit his works both in Italy and abroad. - In 1916 he presented the sculptures in San-Francisco - In 1923 He exhibited his works in Buenos-Aires - In 1928 He exhibited in Brussels Among his most famous works the "Fountain of the Crocodiles" (1926) today in Montecatini Terme (Italy) of which he is a symbol. The bronze shown here depicts two lions in their typical feline indolence. Their bodies lean languidly on each other. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
