This exquisite oil on canvas depicts a mythological scene rendered with great finesse, likely painted during the late 17th century. A reclining nude female figure, partially draped in vermilion silk, rests by a sleeping cherub amidst a classical landscape, while a celestial apparition emerges from swirling clouds above. The ethereal composition masterfully balances sensuality and divinity, reminiscent of the Baroque elegance found in the works of Simon Vouet or the Roman School.
The artist's use of chiaroscuro, delicate tonal transitions, and dynamic figuration speaks to a hand well-trained in the High Baroque tradition. The brushwork remains fluid yet controlled, with soft modeling of flesh tones and a lyrical treatment of drapery and atmosphere.

Composition and Subject Matter:
The painting depicts an allegorical or mythological scene featuring a nude woman, an angel, and a cherub—an archetypal subject of the late Mannerist and early Baroque periods, particularly popular in the 17th century.
The reclining nude figure with a pronounced diagonal pose, the flowing drapery, the dramatic interplay of light and shadow, and the celestial figure emerging from the clouds all echo the stylistic traits of 17th-century Flemish or French masters such as Simon Vouet, Nicolas Poussin, or Guercino.
Stretcher and Canvas Construction:
Based on the reverse canvas, the type of wooden stretcher with wedges, the irregular fiber texture, the grain of oak or coniferous wood, and the old forged nails with wide hammer heads are indeed characteristic of the 17th to early 18th century.
The darkened varnish and pronounced craquelure network across the surface further support an early dating.
Provenance:
Private European collection.
This rare and atmospheric painting would make a distinguished addition to any serious collection of Old Masters or early Baroque allegory.
