Created in the mid 1970s by California artist Raymond Howell (1927–2002), “Chinese Dim Sum Feast,” depicts diners being served in a Chinese restaurant, an example of his oeuvre of Bay Area and a figurative work that expresses his personal experiences and deep understanding of life.
Howell was a prominent African-American painter and printmaker born in Oakland, California. After a difficult childhood in foster homes and reform school, he dedicated himself to art and became a self-taught, self-supporting artist by age thirty.
He often depicted scenes of African American culture, jazz musicians, children at play, and urban street and nightlife taking place in San Francisco and Oakland. His paintings are characterized by their versatile technique, often employing extensive layering of thin pigments to create luminosity in a style that blends realism, surrealism, impressionism, and modern abstraction.
He was also known for his commitment to promoting arts education for minority children. As such, and as per the Ramond Howell website, in September 2002, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors declared that September 7th (Raymond’s birthday) would be ‘Raymond Howell Day’ in San Francisco, and in Oakland, January 6th was declared to be ‘Raymond Howell Day’.
