Pair Of Art Deco Silk Velvet Upholstered Mahogany 'S.S. Normandie' Dining Armchairs, Pierre Patout (French 1879-1965), Circa 1934. This Pair of Art Deco Mahogany Arm chairs upholstered in dark brown Silk Velvet were designed by Pierre Patout to be both functional and beautiful. They were made for the dinning room of 1st Class of the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique Normandie.
SS Normadie was one of the most beautifully designed and luxurious ship in the early 20th century. Armchair from the First-Class Dining Room of the S.S. Normandie.
In 1935, the S.S. Normandie ocean liner’s maiden voyage won it the Atlantic speed record for the next three years. The ship was celebrated as an example of French technological achievement and was treated as a floating version of the 1925 Exposition Universelle des Arts Décoratifs, with French designers commissioned to decorate the ship’s interiors in the Art Deco style. The chair was designed for the first–class dining room of the S.S. Normandie. The chair’s original upholstery bears a stylized crest with two lions, which represents the Normandy region of France. The brass sabots on the ends of the chair’s two front legs were inspired by the designs of Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, a peer Art Deco designer, who often incorporated similar touches.
The SS Normandie 1st Class chairs are on display in various museums, including the Kirkland Museum of the Fine Decorative Art in Denver Colorado. This Pair is from a Washington DC Collection.
Pierre Patout was a French architect and interior designer, who was one of the major figures of the Art Deco movement. His works included the design of the main entrance of the Pavillion d'un Collecteur at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, and the interiors of the ocean liner Normandie in 1930's.
