Fabulous 'neo-primitive' ceramic vase by the well listed artist Frank Colson! It has a great tactile hand feel and an impressive large scale, coming in at nearly 20" in height!
Frank Colson was a versatile artist specializing in clay, bronze, and mixed media, is celebrated for his distinctive creations, which include wall pieces with mask-like features and representational animals with metamorphic elements. Inspired by his extensive world travels, Colson coined the term "neo-primitive" to describe his artistic style. Having studied under Paul Soldner and Richard Petterson at Scripps College, he developed a fascination for native artists, particularly those working in clay. Born in Paris to a Latvian ballet dancer and an American opera singer, Colson's artistic journey began at Florida State University, where he worked in the art department while passionately throwing pots each night. In 1963, he founded a pottery school in Sarasota, Florida. Throughout his career, Colson's curiosity led him to master various media, driven by a sense of adventure and a desire to immerse himself in the mechanical and manual arts. An integral part of the Sarasota arts community, he served on the boards of the Museum of Asian Art and the Public Art Advisory, leaving a lasting impact on the local arts scene.
This piece measures 19 3/4" in height, 3 1/2" wide and 2 3/4" deep. It is in very good vintage condition as shown in the photographs, with age appropriate wear, no chips, cracks or repairs that I can see.
