This one of a kind stunning double-handled lidded vase was made circa 1880-1900 in China and is carved from natural jade.
The large jade stone is deeply hollowed to form a flattened baluster vase, crisply and shallowly carved in low relief on the body with double taotie masks along the vertical notched flange band running down the middle and back of the vase separated by meandering scroll motif patterns repeating in the upper rectangular portion of the waisted neck and on the bottom spreading foot base.
The low relief carving is exceptional and consists of exquisite taotie masks on the front and back within symmetrical stylized scroll motifs separated by vertical dental molding bands and the tapered side upper notched bands on the vase have mythical taotie beast animal handles creating wonderful balanced broad angular shoulders.
The well-fitted lid on this vase is a rectangular trapezoidal /pyramid-type cover the whole top being surrounded by the scroll motif patterns and notched vertical flangs.
he exquisitely crafted jade vase is modeled after ancient Chinese bronze fang hu vessels.
The jade carver would have purposely chosen this aged jade stone for its discolorations and contrast in color on the surface with good consistency of colors, greenish tone and brownish tone with light russet pigments to emphasize its great age and antiquity while creating a beautifully designed piece with a harmonious and balanced whole.

It is a tall vase measuring 9" tall including the lid by 6" wide including handles by 2 1/2" deep with the lid itself being 2 1/2" tall
