Crafted in France … Read more This elegant antique double inkwell brings sculptural character and French symbolism to a desk, library, or study. Crafted in France circa 1880, the ornate desk accessory is made of spelter and signed “A. Bossu” on the reverse.

The composition centers on a finely modeled chantecleer standing proudly atop a naturalistic mound. A national emblem of France, the rooster symbolizes courage, vigilance, and pride. The figure is flanked by two circular ink compartments, each retaining its fitted lid and original removable glass insert.

The shaped base stands on five delicate curved feet ornamented with acanthus leaves. Its scalloped apron is richly decorated with floral and foliate motifs worked in high relief, while additional foliage surrounds the ink holders and central mount. The elaborate details are enhanced by a warm, time-softened patinated finish with gilt accents, lending the piece an appealing sense of depth and age.

Both practical and decorative, this signed antique inkwell would make a distinguished addition to a writing table, executive desk, or collection of French desk accessories. The inkwell is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with both original glass containers intact.
