The Italian designer and engineer Ernesto Gismondi is known for his contribution to the world of lighting design, through the famous manufacture of Artemide lamps, which co-founded in 1960.
Gismondi was born in 1931 in San Remo, and studies aeronautical engineering at the Polytechnic of Milan, where he graduated in 1957; He continues his studies in Rome at the Professional School of Engineering, where he obtained a degree in Missilistic Engineering in 1959.
In 1960 he founded Artemide with the engineer and architect Sergio Mazza (born in Milan in 1931). The goal of the two is to create timeless and innovative objects from a technical point of view, and both will make an important contribution to the manufacturing catalog, in continuous evolution and expansion. Artemide's mission becomes the idealistic realization of unique lighting and inspired by architecture - objective achieved also thanks to collaborations with talents from the world of Italian and non -Italian design. Among the most iconic design of Gismondi for Artemide we mention the Sinsese series (1976), which includes table lamps, from the ground, and the wall; The Tholos wall lamp (1979), and the Tebe (1970s) and Zen (1988) lamps.

Gismondi's contribution to the world of lighting design has been consecrated by several prizes and honors, including the Career Golden Compasso in 1994, the European Design Prize in 1997, and the Ernst & Young Prize as "Entrepreneur of The Year "in 2008 and 2009. He was also vice -president of the ADI (Association of Industrial Design), and has occupied important positions in the world of design, for example at the Ministry of the University and Research, and the Scientific Committee of the I.S.I.A.
