A pair of exceptionally rare and original Low Armchair Rod (LAR) 'cat's cradle' base lounge chairs, designed by Ray and Charles Eames, produced by Herman Miller. Molded orange and yellow fiberglass, chrome-plated steel, rubber. Shadow of missing label/mark on the underside of both chairs. Excellent original condition.
Manufactured beginning in the 1950's, the Eames LAR chair appears in numerous vintage photographs of the legendary Charles and Ray's Eames House in Pacific Palisades, California.
The steel wire base, which achieves maximum stability with minimum materials, acquired a charming nickname within just a short time on the market as a result of its unusual form 'Cat's Cradle' in reference to the children's string game.
