This oil on panel signed with the initials of B.F and dated 1816 is a rare testimony to Freemasonry.
The portrait of this elegantly dressed frank-looking aristocrat firmly holds a compass. On its left a grave bell with the date 1816 and the initials BF.
The compass and the bell carry all the symbolism of Freemasonry.
Freemasonry, since its beginnings in England in the 18th century, was able to integrate painting very early on to illuminate its attire and many painters were received in dressing rooms. Some left their mark in the annals of classical art.

An illustration from 1754, The Mason forged using the tools of his lodge, consists of a sun (the head) a religious book (the bust), two globes and a white apron (the pelvis), two columns (the legs), two squares (the arms), and a compass and a lead wire (the hands).
