The famille … Read more Very fine and very large mid 18th century baluster jar, likely a former garniture piece with a lid. The famille rose on a Batavia or cafe au lait ground gained popularity during the Yongzheng period and carried well through the end of the 18th century. I think this jar likely straddles the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods, due mainly to the potting and the enamels. This vase is significantly larger than most of the period, most commonly seen are ones in the 25-35cm height range and this one missing it’s lid is 40.5cm. It is also in excellent shape, having very minimal wear, with just a few spots of enamel loss, mostly whites, and few light scratches. Quite the survivor.
