He produced highly personal work and more commercial pieces as well both revealing a modern approach to pottery. This large ceramic vase (c. 1950s) of stunning violet blue-purple is weighty and reveals one of his trademark birds - in this case a large rooster and then several smaller ones - etched sgraffito-style in a visual tic-tac-toe.
